10 Background

TAHA is an apex private sector member-based organization leading the country’s efforts in propelling the horticultural development agenda. TAHA in the process of ensuring conducive environment for horticulture stakeholders, realized the scarcity of water in Moshi specifically in Uchira village. As it is known, horticulture engagement requires a farmer to have sufficient water throughout the year for production purposes. Water is essential for irrigation farming and should be accessible easily. In order for the farmers to access water for irrigation they are obligated to incur cost. The cost is mainly accelerated by using electricity. Currently a farmer with an acre needs to pay for electricity an average cost of 25,000 to 45,000 Tanzania shillings depending on the crop type, in order to get water for irrigation.

Maji Chap aiming to strengthen profitability and resilience of horticultural production through adoption of pay-as-you-go water monitoring and usage optimization system. MajiChap will make farmers’ investments worthwhile.
