CALL FOR APPLICATION FOR GRANTS SUPPORT UNDER THE RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECT DEVELOPMENT FACILITY

  1. In support of its min-grid renewable energy project which is joint funded by SIDA,DFID and the world bank the REA has launched several support mechanism to enhance development of min-grid electrification project in mainland Tanzania
  2. One of the support mechanism is the renewable energy project development facility which was launched in early 2020 and has gained good traction since then
  • The REPDF provided funding for eligible projects development activities for renewable energy(solar ,winds ,small hydro and biomass) min-grid with generation capacities of less than 10 MV per project to pay for a portion of the development external costs of consultants engaged to undertake specification pre-investment advisory assignment(e.g feasibility studies business plans and social environmental assessment etc)
  • The REPDF has two components
    i. Tier 1 caters for early stage project development and is available for feasibility studies and other consulted services a grants of up to $100,00 per project is available and needs to be matched with 10% development contribution(in the form of the financial payment not in-kind)
    ii. Tier 2 caters for late stage project development(after approved feasibility study site and resources control being in place with a contingent recoverable grants of up to $150,000 per project that needs to be matched with 25% development contribution( in the form of the financial payment not in-kind)
  • Projects that do not include a min-grid componet those that will supply directly to the national grid or anchor customers are eligible for REPDF support with a maximum 25% of the total REPDF project development support budget of 25% million having been set aside for such project
  • The REPDF support is available for consulting services I the following 3 categories
    i. Technical and engineering advisory services
    ii. Business advisory services
    iii. Environmental and social advisory services

3. Another support mechanism is the strategic developer program which aims to facilitate partners between inexperienced local project developer who lack skills’ and capital and (ii) experienced and well capitalized project developers who have a proven track record of development and implementing renewable energy small power projects in Tanzania or elsewhere in East Africa

  • The SDP is distinct window within the REPDF (with an allocation of $ 1.5 million in REPDF reserved) that aims to assist local development with viable projects to complete hose project for the benefit of their communities and the nation through creating these partnership
  • Capable and well capitalized development may apply to REA to be registered as strategic developers REA will endeavor to match inexperience local developers with registered strategic developers but such a partnership may also be facilities though the own effort on the part of the developers
  • Partnership that have contractually been formalized (e.g joint venire) are eligible to apply REA for a grant funding allocating under the SDP
    i. If successful a forwarding allocation of REPDF AND SDF of funds up to $ 500,00 will be reserved for the partnership for a period of time (18-24)
    ii. These reserved funds may be accessed via the establishment REDPF mechanism (Tier 1 & Tier 2 application) on a project by-project basis

4. REA is inviting application for both REPDF & SDP support mechanism. Application forms are available for download from www.rea.go.tz the following deadlines to apply

REPDF ; THERE IS NO DEADLINE FOR Tier 1 & 2 application. However application will be dealt with on a first-come-first served basis until the REDPF funds are exhausted
