Sickle Cell Programme is a research programme in the Department of Haematology and Blood
Transfusion at Muhimbili University of Health & Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in Dar-es-Salaam,
Tanzania. The programme conducts biomedical research, support health care, advocacy and training.
The Sickle cell Programme has an employment opportunity for highly motivated and results-driven

Reports to the Principal Investigator.

i) Medical statistics
a) Clinical epidemiology of Anaemia in Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)– rates and risk factors
b) Clinical epidemiology of HbF in SCD
c) Facilitating Clinical Trial - Hydroxyurea Trial in SCD

ii) Statistical genetics
a) Genetic epidemiology of SCD
b) Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS) in SCD
c) H3ABioNet activities such as
 Conducting Data analysis jamborees
 Data analysis support in H3A/H3ABIONET and SCP related projects
 Participate in organizing training activities at MUHAS node

Required skills/experience
1. MSc in Statistics (Mathematical Statistics, Biostatistics/Medical Statistics or Biometry,
Bioinformatics) or related discipline. Applicants with major in Mathematics & Statistics,
Computer Science & Statistics, or Mathermatics during their first degree will be given priority.
2. 1 -2 years’ experience in similar position preferably in a health related project.
3. Experience in research design and data analysis of epidemiogical and clinical trials datasets
4. Must be familiar with at least one the statistical packages (e.g R, STATA, S-Plus, SAS, Python)
5. Knowledge in programming languages like Python, Perl, C/C++, Java, RDBMS systems like
MySQL, PSQL and Oracle is an added advantage
6. Strong management skills, self motivation, working under stress and ability to work in a team for
effective work performance
7. Good communication skills
